Abstract

This thesis deals with the conditions of organization and equipment requirements for the development and operation of a small container terminal in the port of Alexandroupolis in Western Thrace. At first, there is an introduction of basic definitions and the way in which container stations operate, the required equipment, as well as the evolution of these commercial nodes over time. It is also considered appropriate to mention their role in the supply chain management process. Furthermore, an in-depth analysis of container terminals operation, is attempted. The management of work and staff, depends on the available technologies. In addition, we provide some proposals for Alexandroupolis, since its commercial development may affect the wider region in light of expanding the possibilities in intermodal transportation. Finally, future challenges are quoted, followed by a summary of all possible options, in view of political and economic issues which may arise, throughout an area where geostrategic balances are extremely fragile.
