Research activity of Universities is a very interesting field of study, because as it is widely argued, internationally, its contribution to the promotion of national research systems is crucial.
The Triple Helix theory that promotes cooperation between the state, Universities and industry bases its dynamics on the positive results that derive from the transformation of Universities into cradles for the production of new knowledge and innovative products and processes. The perspective of this partnership expands the mission of the University, which now goes beyond the traditional role of research and teaching and adopts innovation, spreading the "knowledge triangle". Consequently, the University may contribute significantly to economic development.
The main purpose of this thesis is to investigate the role of Greek Universities in the national system of Research and Development. Through factual analysis of quantitative data, based on the compilation of charts and the study of indicators that capture R&D expenditure and the collaborative dynamics between HEIs and industry and outline the contribution of university research personnel through its number, its scientific publications and through the production of new doctorates, it appears that this role has a significant impact on the Greek research system.
Comparative analysis of data concerning the research activity of the Greek Universities and the corresponding European ones leads to the conclusion that the academic institutions are the main bodies of research production in Greece, while in most EU27 member states the business sector is of major importance, although HEIs’ role is also important. The analysis focuses on the contribution of the Greek University to the national R&D system in relation to what is noted in the EU27 respectively and given its pivotal role, it is found that the Triple Helix theory, is compatible with the Greek case.
