The relationship between burnout and resilience of primary school teachers and the correlation with the dimensions of occupational well-being

The purpose of this study was to correlate and investigate burnout with the resilience of primary school teachers, as well as the correlation of the above two, with the main dimensions of occupational well-being. At the same time, were recorded the levels of burnout, resilience and occupational well-being and they were investigated in relation with the demographic data. Finally, the predictors of burnout in primary school teachers were investigated.
Bibliographically, the burnout of teachers refers to the weariness and chronic stress that comes from various factors related to their work environment. But one of the factors that inhibits the appearance of burnout syndrome is resilience. Resilience affects the occupational well-being of teachers in a positive way. Therefore, burnout also belongs to the negative part of occupational well-being, since the lack of well-being and the mechanisms that strengthen it, such as resilience, can lead to burnout. However, in Greece the above concepts have been studied separately and there are few researches that attempt to connect all three. Therefore, in the present research, as mentioned, an attempt is made to correlate and investigate them.
The research was conducted on 120 teachers working in Primary Education from all over Greece. More specifically, the sample consists of primary school teachers from public and private schools, primary and kindergartens, throughout Greece, who filled in the survey questionnaire electronically. The analysis of the data was quantitative.
The main findings showed that teachers have medium to low levels of burnout, while their resilience and occupational well-being are at medium to high levels. At the same time, in relation to the demographic data, it was found that higher levels of occupational well-being seem to be experienced by those with only a basic degree in contrast to those with a master's degree, as well as teachers in kindergarten compared to teachers in primary school. In addition, those who work in public schools have more resilience than those who work in private schools. Also, teachers who are not married feel higher occupational well-being and ability compared to teachers who are married or divorced. At the same time, it was found that the more resilient teachers are, the less likely they are to show burnout. In addition, the more occupational well- being teachers have, the less likely they are to experience burnout and the greater they are to experience resilience. Finally, the results showed that the higher degree of satisfaction from the workload and the working atmosphere, the positive acceptance of the changes and the secure relationships, lead to lower levels of burnout.
In conclusion, although teachers' resilience and occupational well-being are at a satisfactory level, so they also less likely to experience burnout, further investigation may help to strengthen them, which can bring about positive changes in school community.
