The contemporary era is influenced by rapid changes, which mark the need for continuous improvement, renewal and upskilling of citizens’ knowledge and skills. The educational policy should be designed and implemented, by satisfying the needs and peculiarities of its participants. Therefore, the modern educational reality requires the prominence and study of issues related to the access of all individuals to education.
The aim of this Thesis is to study the access of deaf students in higher education, focusing on the Greek reality. Τhe overall European framework, which supports the access of people with disabilities in higher education, is being presented, while emphasis is given to the specific references made for the deaf students.
The topic of this Thesis was selected, taking into account that the access of all people to education is a fundamental right, which equips all people with knowledge, skills and renders them contributors to the development and progress of the societies.
To achieve the objectives of this Thesis, a study of the European Union’s policy was carried out, along with a review of the Greek policies about the inclusion and an overview of the Greek Higher Education Institutions’ reality. In the Greek Higher Education Institutions, the teaching content and organization is a responsibility of the state, and the European Union has a supporting role.
A key component of this research, except for researching the theoretical part, was the investigation of the views of deaf students regarding their access and inclusion in Higher Education in Greece. Three questionnaires were developed, which targeted the deaf students studying in Greek Higher Education Institutions, the Professors, and the members of the Institutions as well. Finally, one interview was conducted with a deaf graduate.
