The role and leadership of the elementary school principal is considered paramount in achieving the visions and goals of the school unit. To this end, great importance is given to the process of selecting school principals. This exploratory study examines the views of schools’ principals and educators on the importance of postgraduate studies in the effective exercise of the principal’s duties in Primary School. In our research volunteered to participate – providing answers to specific questions – a total of one hundred and fifty-nine (159) amongst whom only twenty-one (21) were primary school principals.
During the analysis of the results, the standpoints of the principals and the teachers were compared. The basic results of the research are the following; a) οn the one hand the teachers and the principals of the Primary schools do not consider postgraduate studies to be an essential qualification of a principal, on the other hand they classify the sector of the "Organization and administration of the school" higher than the one of the "School economics" as a sector of the education of the principals and they point out that the seminar type education is more preferable than the acquisition of a postgraduate degree, b) the teachers seem to be aware of the professional experience and the degree acquired by their principals while their principals consider that they possess the qualification of vision to a greater extent which is something that contradicts the views of the teachers who in turn believe that the principals possess the qualification of providing help to their teachers when they are asked to a greater extent and c) the views of the principals and the teachers show a huge discrepancy as far as the participation of the teachers' Association in the process of the selection of the principals is concerned since the teachers consider it to be much more than the principals do.
