The present paper looks into the views of Greek teachers on school autonomy. Do they have any autonomy in their workplace? Do they need more ? Thesearethemainquestionsofthesurvey. 159 GreekteachersfromAthenswereoursample. The research was carried out with a written questionnaire. It isinvestigated whether the Greek teachers have pedagogicaland administrative autonomy. Also ,it is being researched if they are able to decide for professional development matters and if teacher autonomy is related to job satisfaction.
As the research results show , the greek educational system is still centralized because the majority of teachers do not have autonomy in basic matters and only few of them decline satisfied from their job. A basic research finding is that all the participants wish for more school autonomy and especially those who do not have any so far.
