The role and characteristics of headteacher-leader during the pandemic period in the education the case of special education

The present study deals with the effort of the head of teachers to cope with the crisis created
by the pandemic of covid- 19. Through this effort, their characteristics and role are
highlighted.
In the theoretical part of the present study, reference is made to the concept of leadership,
to the models of leadership but also to the concept of crisis and how to deal with it. The
purpose of the study is to focus on the case of secondary schools of special education. This is
a case study of the secondary special education in Greece.
The study was conducted using the interview method and head of teachers answered a
series of open-ended questions. The interviews were conducted live in June 2021 and
completed in September 2021.
The results of the interviews show that the head of teachers tried to implement the
instructions of the government, which, however, were general for all school units. They had to
adapt the instructions to the specifics of their students but also to deal with the extra workload
due to a pandemic. All these with extremely reduced staff in some cases, due to
special purpose leave that belonged to sensitive groups. Also, the largest numbers of
teachers were contract employees who worked in the specific schools for the first time.
Later, when special education schools did not suspend their operation, the fear of transmitting
the disease was added due to the fact that the measures against the pandemic could not be
fully implemented and therefore effective in the students of special schools. The area of
special education needs further research.
