The dissertation focuses on the study of transnational phenomena. In particular, it
seeks to explain and analyze the appearance, development and consequences of
these phenomena in the international system. It focuses on international relations
and in particular international politics, as manifested in the international system.
Consequently, it also includes the operation of intergovernmental institutions in the
international arena. The main case for analysis is transnational organized crime. The
research focuses on identifying and explaining the ways in which a transnational
phenomenon such as organized crime appears and develops in the international
system, is linked to states and international institutions, and has certain implications.
The emphasis is placed on the search for causal relationships, that is, the processes
which can demonstrate how specific results originate from specific causes. This
search for cause-and-effect relationships in the study of a transnational phenomenon
aims to lead to a positive contribution of the thesis in the field of international
realtions discourse, both from a theoretical and a practical point of view. To achieve
this goal, the case study of a significant manifestation of transnational organized
crime is chosen, that of human smuggling and trafficking from the Balkan and Turkish
organized crime during the period from 1990 onwards, which is directly related to the
wider region of the Balkans and the Near East.
