Energy is one of the most important inputs for the economic development of any country. On the other hand, foreign direct investment aims to seek natural resources from the company that is characterized as a direct investor, in order to gain resources at a lower cost than in the country of origin. Hellenic Petroleum is a very important group in the Greek economic reality as it is the most important oil refining company in the country and one of the most important in the retail sale. In addition to the large volume of business activities in Greece, in recent years the group has penetrated the Balkan market and specifically in Northern Macedonia, Bulgaria, Serbia and Montenegro. Except the case of Serbia, in the other three countries the subsidiaries hold dominant or important positions in the market. In general, despite the difficulties, they stimulated the presence of Hellenic Petroleum in the wider region and highlighted its leading role in the wider region of Southeastern Europe.
