Retirement is a very important issue for most people today. It is a major topic of discussion around the world, as a number of factors, such as the rapid ageing of the population, are putting pressure on social welfare systems as decisions must be made on their viability. Also, regarding retirement, there is a strong interest in the effect it has on the health of the individual and consequently what is its correlation with mortality. In this dissertation we will study the effect of retirement and a number of other factors on mortality. We use data from the sixth wave of the SHARE survey conducted in 2015, and also take into account the deaths that occurred within the next two years, until the seventh wave, in 2017.
