This diploma thesis deals with the health-related quality of life in patients who suffer
from Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. These two diseases belong to Idiopathic
Inflammatory Bowel Diseases; they are chronic and recurrent and they affecting the
patients both physically and mentally. The aim of this diploma thesis is to evaluate the
health-related quality of life of these patients using the EQ5D-3L questionnaire and to
identify the factors that affect their quality of life,so that we can understand their needs
and design an integrated care system that will cover them.
The first part of the diploma thesis, which is the bibliography part, describes the two
diseases in detail, as well as the theory of health-related quality of life. The second part
of the diploma thesis, which is part of the research, is a statistical analysis of 70
questionnaires answered by patients in the gastrointestinal clinic of Alexandra General
Hospital in Attica. The collection of questionnaires lasted from 01/09/2018 to
01/03/2019. The questionnaires, which were given to the patients, were the Greek version
of the EQ5D-3L and a questionnaire designed
for the purpose of the present diploma thesis containing social, demographic, and diseaserelated characteristics.
Results: In the first four dimensions of the EQ5D, patients did not seem to have serious
problems, with the exception of the fifth dimension, in which 86% of patients reported
to have moderate to excessive anxiety or distress. The Cronbach's Alpha internal
consistency coefficient is equal to 0.8276. This means that the reliability of the EQ5D-3L scales is acceptable. The average value of the EQ5D-5L index is 0.746 and the
average value of EQVAS is 74.11429. Linear regression analysis showed that active
disease was negatively related with HRQL and was statistically significant (p = 0.009)
xii
and that female gender negatively affected HRQL and this relationship was
statistically significant (p = 0.024).
Conclusions: The present analysis showed that patients with IIBD reported a lower
quality of life than the general population and that active disease and female gender were
associated with lower reported HRQL in these patients. In addition, the EQ5D-3L
questionnaire is a reliable measurement tool for HRQL in patients with IIBD.
