Introduction: In the shipping industry there is a huge development and in the immediate future the 'traditional' ships could be replaced by the autonomous ships, ships without a captain or other crew. The unmanned ships will use the internet to collect data on weather, sea routes, obstacles, etc. In this way, unmanned ships are expected to be the best possible safety and time-saving.
Purpose: In this project, an extensive analysis is carried out to present the meaning of unmanned ships, any positive or negative effects that may be caused, and their application to the existing international institutional framework. An analysis of key International Conventions is underway to highlight the concerns and grey zones that need to be overcome for the implementation of maritime voyages without passengers.
Methodology: This paper evaluated and analyzed scientific articles internationally recognized in the field of Shipping, which have been published in electronic databases and magazines since 2005, with particular emphasis on the last five years.
Conclusions: Unmanned ships, at first, will be consisted of few crew members who will remain on board for supervision. Secondly, the ultimate goal is to travel without any crew, as long as unmanned ships are in line with the International Maritime Law.
