The subject of study of this thesis is the ship demolition market. The provided relevant information for this market is few and inaccurate, because the public opinion considers it as a dirty, polluting and dangerous industry. The purpose of the thesis is to examine in detail the demolition industry, in order to identify its particular characteristics and to determine whether the public’s assumption is actually valid. In addition, apart from the analysis, emphasis is given to the utilization of the products recovered from scrapped ships and, more specifically the issue of reusing ship equipment and machinery. Reuse is an alternative recycling practice compared to the usual process of converting waste materials into reusable objects, which contributes in reducing the environmental footprint, while it could increase the profit margin of the industry.
The paper consists of four chapters. The first chapter mainly includes introduction, where a brief display of the shipping cycles is given, the dynamic relationship between the four shipping markets is discussed and the corporate environment of the demolition market is described. The second chapter refers to the most known ship recycling methods, the positive and negative effects originated from demolition industry and the major countries where the industry is located. The third chapter analyzes the institutional framework applied to the demolition market and the role of regulatory authorities. Finally, the fourth chapter deals with the issue of "Reuse & Repair" materials.
