In this study, mortality levels by cause of death for the counties of Greece is studied for the year 2011. Three main causes of death are considered: deaths from infectious and parasitic diseases, deaths from respiratory diseases and violent deaths (due to external causes), for both sexes and for all age groups.
The work aims at presenting levels for these three causes of deaths at regional level for the year 2011 in such a way that it is possible to compare different Greek geographical areas as well as the demographic characteristics of the deceased in terms of gender, so that reliable conclusions can be drawn about differentials.
To achieve this purpose, firstage-specific mortality rates by cause of death are computed for both sexes combined, at national level, and, subsequently, the expected number of deaths is estimated by gender, cause of death and region. Then, the standardized mortality ratio (SMR) for each gender and county is estimated based on the expected and the observed numbers of deaths by gender, cause of death and county. SMRs are based on the method of indirect standardization.
To summarize the conclusions of this work, levels of mortality due to infectious and parasitic diseases differentiate across regions but only slightly in relation to sex. Mortality levels from respiratory diseases do not differentiate by gender, but they present geographical variation; northern and central Greece have higher mortality rates than Greek islands. Deaths due to external causes differentiate very strongly in terms of gender but also of region.
