Abstract

This paper focuses on maritime accidents that happen in congested areas. Marine and human casualties on merchant ships are going to be studied in the following areas: the Turkish Straits, the Strait of Malacca and the Strait of Singapore. In particular, through the study of scientific and annual reports of experts and international organizations on this subject, it will be examined if there’s a possible increased risk of accidents and loss of human life in congested areas. The question is whether the crew is facing a greater risk in these areas. The results of this analysis are going to summarise the measures that can be taken in congested areas, in order to reduce the risk of marine casualties. The bibliography, which has been used in this thesis, is consisted of scientific papers, reports, analyses and annual reviews by international organizations.
