This Diploma Thesis examines both the institutional framework has been adopted so far to reduce CO2 emissions from shipping sector and the implementation of the European Regulation on the monitoring, reporting and verification of carbon dioxide emissions from maritime transport. Initially, there is an extensive reference to gases that contribute to the creation and intensity of the greenhouse effect, but also the causes and consequences can be caused by it. Following, there is a quantitative estimate of the contribution of shipping to climate change mitigation in order to be understood the importance of adopting additional and more drastic measures. In addition, presents the institutional framework that has been adopted globally to reduce CO2 emissions from shipping and in particular the measures have been taken from International Maritime Organization. Furthermore, the implementation of regional instrument of Monitoring, Reporting and Verification is analyzed in detail, describing all stages, the timetable for its implementation as well as measures taken by European Commission through working papers and best practices guidance in order to make easier its understanding for shipping companies whose ships are subject to the above regulation. In the last chapter, an assessment of the European Regulation has been conducted, which includes a comparison of the same and data collection system, adopted by IMO, its strengths and weaknesses as well as impacts may have caused. In conclusion, our findings focus on whether its implementation will eventually contribute to enhancing the image of shipping in the environment and will create a new reality by eliminating the market barriers that no regulation or measure has so far been able to do.
