It is a fact that recent institutional developments have significantly influenced the cost of managing the claims that may arise from all parties involved in the shipping market. Claim management requires expertise and know how to create a rational strategy that best fits the business interests. This diploma thesis aims to highlight how the costs of managing claims are shaped by recent changes in the legal framework for ship fuels and the reduction of sulfur emissions. In particular, initially a reference is made to the fares market, the institutional framework, maritime insurance and claims categories, and the claims settlement systems are then presented. This is followed by a case study analyzing the way and costs of claim management in the light of new institutional developments concerning fuels and sulfur emissions. Finally, apart from the fact that the new regulation will increase the number of claims, their management is significantly complicated and the cost of managing them is increased.
