The educational sector is one of the most crucial t in a society. The funding received by this sector allows the various decision-makers that are in it to improve or create new programs and infrastructures. In Greece, the main funding is through state resources. Since 2010, Greece has been in a long-term economic crisis that has had an impact on the amounts provided by the state. This study will examine the ways and amounts of funding for Greek Primary Education.
The literature that was studied focused on the importance of education in general and of primary education in particular. Research has argued that the competences and skills acquired by pupils at primary school contribute to their later school, academic and personal career. This emphasizes the important role of primary education.
This project was based on the gathering and processing of data from valid sources such as the Greek Statistical Office (ELSTAT) and Eurostat.
Funding rates in primary and secondary education all showed decreasing trends during the period that was studied. However, the decline noted in the primary education was marginal, while its percentage to total funding increased. This was caused as reduction in funding resources was more apparent in the secondary. Possible reasons are the fact that the primary education has many more students than the secondary as well as the fact that it is important for the next stages of the students' educational course. Additionally, considerations were made for ways to increase funding through the presence of the private sector and the ESPA programs.
