In this thesis, following a thorough review of bibliography, the trend and the evolution that took place within the last decades in the liner shipping industry are analyzed, especially during the period 2006 – 2015, as well as in the port industry that handling containers, i.e. the development of multimodal transport and logistics, of hubs and the occurrence of horizontal and vertical integration.
Next, changes and developments in the structure and form of the port industry's liner shipping are presented through horizontal and vertical integration. In the light of the above, reference is made to the impact of the aforementioned developments on the demand and supply to European ports and in Asian also, with a focus on competition.
The collection of data was crucial for the study of the competition level in European Union’s ports. For this aim are calculated the below concentration indexes: a) Index of Market Shares, b) Concentration Ratio, c) Herfindal-Hirschiman index.
Finally, the conclusion drawn is that a percentage of 50% approximately of the total worldwide traffic of TEUs is concentrated in the ports of Asia than in Europe. In the port industry and for the period 2006-2015, we have moderate concentration of the market with downward trends. Through the CR8, HHI concentration indexes the conclusion is that the European Union market is concentrated with northern ports to record the highest concentration.
