The main aim of the present dissertation is the exploration of possible effects morbidity may have on early retirement in Greece and other European countries. First, a description of the different retirement and welfare regimes is presented regarding various European countries; emphasis is placed upon the Greek retirement system. A discussion on the perils population ageing presents for retirement systems follows. Subsequently, data from the SHARE study are used to assess possible effects of morbidity on early retirement, using logistic regression models and SPSS. The findings indicate that certain chronic conditions such as stroke, cancer and long term illness are strongly associated with a tendency among the working population aged 50 or higher to retire early, independently of other demographic factors and of the type of employment.
