Tourism constitutes the most important sector of Greek economy, contributing greatly to the GDP and employment. Furthermore, as a highly extrovert economic sector, it contributes to the counterbalance of the Balance of Payments and the inflow of revenues. Due to the sustainable recession, the increase of goods and services exports is prerequisite for the recovery of the Greek economy. The further enhancement of tourist services exports can contribute in that direction. That requires, among others, the qualitative upgrade and expansion of the land’s tourist products, which, in turn, require significant investments in public and private infrastructure, as well as the improvement of human resources employed in tourism. However, due to the financial crisis, the available resources to support the tourism industry are limited. For this reason the exploitation of NSRF funds of the new programming period 2014 – 2020 is imperative. This is the basic research object of this thesis. After the presentation of the new architecture of the cohesion policy and the Greek Operational Programs, the financing opportunities for the promotion of tourism are traced. For an intact and coherent analysis, the harnessing possibilities of the NSRF funds in the country’s illustrious tourist area, the region of Southern Aegean, are located and examined. The research concludes that there are substantial opportunities of implementing a regional strategy for tourism through action of the sectoral Operational Programs, as well as through the Regional Operational Program.
