Abstract
The value we place on the services nature provides, varies in space and time, but these fundamental resources are extremely important to human well-being, health and livelihoods. Regardless, the global loss and degradation of habitats and species continue at an increasing pace. The large monetary value of ecosystem services should in itself provide sufficient evidence of the urgent need to invest in the protection of natural resources. However, the willingness of nations to allocate financial resources for these services is currently low.
The aim of this thesis is to examine the economic benefits of ecosystem services in conjunction with the lack of willingness to implement them. For this purpose, a study of scientific articles focused on the value of nature and of biodiversity, for mankind and the economy, was conducted. The causal factors that determine how nations invest in their physical capital have been studied, whereas at the meanwhile, the process surrounding decision-making on the possible sector and the level of investment that may take place, has been thoroughly examined.
The results showed that the implementation of ecosystem services can bring significant economic benefits, while helping to protect the environment. Furthermore, appropriate environmental models can be formulated in order to enhance the economic prosperity of a region. Finally, we should always bear in mind that nature is of vital importance for mankind, and thus it should be respected globally.
