During the economic crisis in Greece a growth leverage is the export sector. This thesis is intended at analyzing the new EU Customs Code (TCN), established by the European Union, to capture the benefits for transit trade at European level and in general both for imports and for exports. Also, this paper analyzes the freight flows that entered and left the port of Piraeus in the first semester of 2017 as a center of transit trade. For the above reasons, research was conducted through interviews between people, who own leading positions in both transit trade and customs procedures. The procedure of interviews lasted from June until August 2017.
The benefits, which result after the code analysis are to ensure simpler and faster clearance procedures for traders, so that consumers have faster and cheaper access to the goods. Also the rationalization of customs legislation and customs procedures across the EU, as well as the completion of the transition to a paperless customs environment and fully electronic and interoperable constitute two more benefits of code.
To sum up, the resulting conclusions from the analysis of the statistical data from the port of Piraeus are the following. Initially, imports are more than exports for the first semester of 2017, according to the Hellenic Statistical Authority, and sounds the alarm for the country's trade deficit. However, for the first quarter of 2017, we see a slight decrease in imports and a small increase in exports but not at a satisfactory level. Finally, in June there is a significant increase not only in imports but also in exports in comparison with the previous months.
