The present paper studies mortality by cause of death in all regions of Greece for 2011. This paper especially focuses on the two main causes of death and, more specifically, on neoplasms and cardiovascular diseases for both genders and for all ages. The analysis is based on the use of Standardized Mortality Ratios (SMRs) by gender and cause of death. The SMRs were estimated for all regions of Greece, using the population by age and gender recorded in the 2011 census and the average number of all deaths for 2010-2012 by cause and sex for these regions. As the ‘standard’ mortality schedule used is based on the age-specific mortality rates for the whole population (including both men and women), it is possible to compare the SMRs not only between prefectures but also between genders. Finally, 95% confidence intervals were calculated for the SMRs. The main conclusions that emerged from the analysis are the following: The mortality of men is higher compared to women for both causes of death. Moreover, the findings indicate higher mortality due to cardiovascular diseases for both genders in northern Greece, especially in the Region of Thrace, compared to the average mortality of Greece. Finally, the region of Evritania exhibits the lowest mortality rate for both neoplasms and cardiovascular diseases for both genders.
