Within the European Union, the term Insularity has been most notably used not only
for its geopolitical meaning but also for the dimensions it can take in the economic field.
In Greece, as the government tries to design a development policy for the
redevelopment of the country, the term Insularity is used more often and is an issue that
needs proper planning.
The purpose of this thesis is to present the phenomenon of Insularity and to analyze a
procedure for improvement which could assist on the development of the insular groups in
terms of connectivity and transportation. Finally, it will present a case study in order to
quantify the term of insularity, which will be followed by results and proposals to address this
problem and generally the geographical discontinuity and island isolation.
The research carried out in this case study concerns the complex of the islands of
Kalymnos, Telendos, Pserimos, Leros, Pharmakonisi, Agathonisi, Lipsi, Arki, Patmos.
