The composition of the student population in Greece began to change since the late
1980s and continues to this day due to the increasing presence of pupils from other
countries with a different language than the dominant mother tongue. A response to
this phenomenon was Law 2413/1996 on the establishment of intercultural schools
and intercultural education, with the aim of addressing new educational needs.
Twenty years after their foundation, we come to investigate whether the primary
objectives of Intercultural Schools have been achieved. In a constantly changing and
evolving reality, it is interesting to explore the evolution of these schools, the new
challenges, the conditions under which intercultural schools operate, the teachers’
training, all under the eve of the economic and refugee crisis.
The research is being conducted in the three Intercultural Gymnasiums in Attica, in
the Municipalities of Athens, Elliniko and Acharnes, in order to illuminate aspects of
their function. The survey presents the characteristics of each school, the student
community, the logistical infrastructure, the shortcomings, the challenges faced by the
Directorate and the teachers, the training needs, the gaps in the system, as well as the
opportunities and the beautiful moments won by professors of an Intercultural School.
The research tool is a semi-structured interview with teachers.
It has become apparent that the existing system is considered ineffective, as evidenced
by pupils' performance as well as the deficiencies observed by teachers in either the
logistics or the legal framework. They suggest changes in the organization and
operation of intercultural schools by adopting a more student-centered and less
assimilative approach, in order to more effectively apply the principles of intercultural
education.
