The aim of this dissertation is to present the business plan and the investments of the
shipping company COSCO in Piraeus. At first we refer to the port of Piraeus, its geographical
position and importance. We also refer to the ten more important European ports for
containers. We make a brief historical review to liner shipping and have a look on the
containers shipping trade routes. Also we put the question why the port of Piraeus was chosen
by Cosco. We analyst the Cosco's strategy, the port concession contract, business plan, profile
and purpose of the company and also the reactions caused by this concession. Subsequently
we look at the investments that have been completed and those that are expected to take place
in the future and we take into account the externalities that arise from all these investments.
Finally, the conclusion of the present dissertation, pointing out that besides the problems
created by the concession of the port, the benefits were many, such as the development of the region, the creation of new jobs, the promotion of the combined transport and the upgrading
of its geostrategic role, making it very competitive in northern Europe as well as a Global
Transit Center.
