Most initiatives to implement Maritime Spatial Planning have been promoted for the creation of
marine protected areas over the past 30 years, but the most recent maritime e spatial plans in
European countries focus on multi-purpose marine management as a whole. In July 2014, the
European Parliament and the Council adopted legislation on the creation of a common framework
for maritime spatial planning in Europe. Although each EU country will be free to plan its
maritime activities, the coherence of planning at the local, regional and national level will be
ensured by setting common minimum requirements for shared seas. Some northern European
countries had set before the EU Directive was drafted. the foundations for the development of
marine spatial planning and are important steps towards the implementation of ecosystem-based
management in the marine environment. Greece has not yet formally established a national MSP
plan but is obliged to implement it by all Member States until 2021 and in 2016 the Ministry of
Environment and Energy has put into public consultation a draft law on harmonization with the
EU Directive. Finally, the benefits of implementing MSP at local level are reported in the
Kyparissia region, focusing mainly on the harmonization of maritime activities with the Natura
2000 protected area.
