The present Master dissertation focuses on EU competition policy in maritime markets, addressing the issue from both a historical and an institutional perspective within globalisation. The aim of the present study is to first of all reveal the main institutional and organisational categories that discern EU competition policy in maritime markets. Moreover, the study uses those categories as analytical-interpretative tools, as well as potential policy measures that may deal with future challenges in the European maritime sector. In view of this, the study provides answers to the following fundamental questions: what is the historical evolution of EU competition policy in maritime markets? Are decisions taken on the basis of member states’ collective (community) interest? What is the role of the EU institutions in designing competition policy in maritime markets? What is the new European strategy for the maritime sector in the new international economic context as this is shaped by the economic crisis?
