This essay deals with the operational management of small shipping companies. More specifically it focuses in the Greek shipping companies that are involved in the transportation of dry bulk and general cargoes in the region of Greece and Mediterranean area. One of the objectives, is the description of the mechanisms of this market and of the everyday problems these companies face. Followingly, the analysis of their problems is conducted and, with the use of SWOT analysis as a management tool, the identification of those factors that determine their management in every operational level is achieved. The main aim, is the submission of a proposal describing the most important elements that strategic planning of these companies should take into account, given the current economic crisis, for the maintenance of viability and growth. The basic conclusions are, the need for adopting a more defensive attitude, the need for maximizing their efforts of maintenance of vesteds and the essential reconstruction of their operational management. These aim in the most effective preparation of a company for the achievement of long-lasting and that of growth in terms of size in order to achieve the entrance to larger markets with better prospects and conditions.
