Abstract

Introduction: The phenomenon of illicit drug use is a problem with several dimensions. The rapid spread of drugs cause physical problems to the users themselves, psychological problems for users and people in their environment, and we must not forget the social dimension of the phenomenon with all the problems that occur in a society with a high proportion of users. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the rapid spread of illicit drugs internationally and in Greece. Furthermore, the aim was the analysis of the antinarcotic policy in Greece. Method: For the purposes of this essay we thoroughly reviewed printed and electronic literature on the spread of drugs, the policies aiming to deal with the phenomenon, as well as Greek and international laws aiming to the solution of the problem. Results-Conclusions: The use, substance abuse and addiction has taken great dimensions and is a phenomenon aggravating and destructive, both for societies and for their members. The reasons that lead people to drugs is both individual and social. At national level, outstanding organizations have developed in Greece who have shouldered the burden of implementing the national action plan against the spread of the use of illicit drugs. In the fight against the spread of illicit drug use cooperation among all the nations in the world and a common policy is required.
