Abstract

The health sector is one of the most complex and particular sectors of the economy of a country. The consumption of very high budgetary resources is required to achieve a high level of health and welfare. Therefore, achieving high supply of goods and health services regarding to the possible consumption of less resources of the state budget is a challenge. Sub-sectors of the health sector of a country, such as the pharmaceutical health expenditures, have a significant impact on the health expenditures and require study and analysis. The aim of this thesis is the study and analysis of the impact of the economic crisis on the pharmaceutical health expenditures in Greece during the period 2009 – 2013. The emerged sharp decline of the pharmaceutical expenditure, as a result of the crisis in the Greek economy is studied. Secondly, the relation of the implementing measures and reforms in the field of medicine and their effect on the pharmaceutical expenditures is examined. The selected method for this study is the analysis of the statistics and the information of national organizations such as the Greek Statistical Authority, the National Drugs Agency, the Foundation of Economic and Industrial Research and valid Greek and foreign literature sources.
