The purpose of this thesis is the description of Classification Societies comparing their national and international competitiveness. In the modern institutional framework for shipping, the Classification Societies can contribute to ensuring the protection of human life at sea, ship and cargo safety but also in environmental protection, but their contribution is limited to a degree by need to remain competitive and free to the changing environment of the shipping industry.
Analyzing the quality of their services the reasons and circumstances for which they are selected by the management companies are explained, depending on their objectives and their services to a technical level and safety management level. This analysis can clarify the interests of Classification Societies as apart from their contribution to the shipping sector, questions are generated about their role today and in the future in the global shipping industry.
