This thesis aimed to study the Coeliac Disease, its etiology, its clinical picture and its symptoms, its treatment, its epidemiological data on the global level and its impact on social and economic level. The disease, despite the fact that initially was regarded as rare, it has been proven itself as a common chronic disease that affects children and adults at 1% worldwide, while in some countries exceed this percent. The etiology of the disease is twofold and refers to the intake of gluten as an environmental factor and genetic predisposition. A large proportion of the population remains non-diagnosed and asymptomatic, while it is not absolutely confirmed that treatment of disease by exclusion of gluten from the diet improves the quality of life of patients. The disease, as asymptomatic, is connected to a number of other serious chronic diseases, including diabetes, while as a diagnosed disease, it is associated with extraintestinal anomalies causing discomfort to patients. Additionally, the cost of not-diagnosed disease and the cost of gluten-free diet is high, thus causing serious problems with overall social and personal burden.
