Medical graduates' selection of speciality is a complex multi-factorial procedure in which many personal and socio-economic factors play an important role. Αim of the present study is to determine the criteria of their speciality selection of either general / family medicine from doctors training to become specialists, as well as to determine the effect the various factors have on their selection. For the realization of this research a suitable questionnaire was designed, which included questions that concerned various factors that were related to the final selection of medical speciality and at the same time showed us clearly the general profile of doctors training to become specialists at different medical fields. The material of this study constituted the answers of a random sample of 368 Greek doctors training to become specialists (165 in general medicine and 203 in other specialities). The study indicated to us that the majority of doctors primarily select their speciality according to their interest in the scientific subject and then according to good professional prospects and their contact with the patients. More specifically, however, in the case of general practitioners it appears that the main reason for these doctors' selection is the good and immediate professional prospects. Finally, compared to the results of other similar research conducted abroad, there has been indicated a great difference between the Greek doctors' criteria on their selection of medical speciality and those of their colleagues' criteria abroad.
