This dissertation consists of four chapters and the conclusions. In the conclusions the main findings of the previous analysis are summarized. In the first chapter, certain concepts of Political Science (‘’political behavior”, ‘’political participation”, ‘’political culture’’, ‘’political socialization”) are clarified. Next, the term “youth” is analyzed and the range of ages the dissertation focuses on is specified. The second chapter presents theoretical and empirical data which are relevant to the political participation of young people in Greece and Europe in our days. Following, the theory of post-materialism is analyzed. In the academic bibliography post materialism is presented as a significant factor contributing to the emergence of new forms of political participation. Especially interesting is the data which is presented regarding the level of post-materialism in modern Europe. The third chapter focuses on the alienation of young people from the traditional types of political participation and their preference to extra-institutional forms of participation. Consequently, the most popular of these forms of participation (political consumerism, signing a petition, participation in a protest march or in Nongovernmental Organization) are analyzed in detail. The fourth and final chapter analyses the meaning of electronic participation and presents the reason why the European Union considers electronic participation significant for contemporary democracies. The hypothesis that the Internet influences the political behavior of the young by providing them with increasingly new possibilities and opportunities of participation and expression is investigated.
