View/ Open
Abstract
In recent years, environmental issues are gaining ground internationally. The incorrect
practices in the management of Hazardous Medical Waste, as mixing and processing with
household waste as long as the burning without control witch takes place in incinerators
that do not meet the environmental conditions, led to rapid implementation of legislative
steps for the country, dating from 2003 to 2009. The average quantity of HMW in
country-level amounts to 0,7 Kg / bed / day, HMW with infectious nature waste occupies
dominant position. Important role in proper management of HMW comes about the
creation of a guide with rules for Medical Hazardous Waste, which were provided and
presented not only health and safety measures but also planning in emergency situations.
The cornerstone of safe management of HMW is the staff and its training. First of all, this study focuses on the description of Medical Waste, in methods and
sources of production. Secondly special emphasis is given in health and safety measures
and training of staff, who was involved at any stage of the management of HMW. At the
end of the study, a techno - economic research is presented, concerning a new incinerator
witch located in Attica. The specific unit has the opportunity to gather and process the
HMW from Health Units by the lowest cost.
