In the last years an intense incoming of the economic science to the sanitary sector is an attempt to search of means in order to upgrade the health standard and to face problems that arise from the increasing cost in services. Health and the financing of sanitary services have never been an element of the economic science. From the beginning of its appearance, which is the 17th century, it have never - with the exemption of the last decades - been tried an economic evaluation of health services. Yet, in the last years a wide view of acceptance, which forms a theoretical setting of this new economic aspect given to the sanitary sector, is that the health level of the population can be influenced from the economic development of each country. The goals of the economic science of health have to do with the reassurance and improvement of health standard of the population through the organization and supply of health services, always based on the economic problem of narrowness of goods and human resources. In this research first of all the health role from different approaches (as public or private good) but also the role of welfare state, are analyzed. Furthermore, a reference to the types and to the organization of health systems and how these are classified, is made, in order to approach the financing frame and health expenses with the aim to review the Greek insurance system and how this was built as years passed.
