Avian influenza consists a new threat for the global community. The first few cases that have been noticed in Eastern Asia in 2003 have now increased and the diffusion of the virus has been unusually rapid. The precautionary slaughter of 150 millions poultry in the above mentioned area has created a huge financial disaster, while several opinions have been heard for negative consequences at the eco-system. The biggest concern though has been created by the fact that the virus has overcome the barrier among species, causing human losses, with victims who mainly belonged in the network of animal production. Target of the present graduate thesis was not only the analysis of the characteristics of a crisis and the reference to the ways that can manage it, but the description of the present situation in Greece, the analysis of the virus’ consequences, the mention to the priorities that have to exist during the avian influenza and the comprehensive analysis of a contingency plan so that the avian influenza can be effectively faced. As has been presented in the present graduate thesis, the preparation and the reaction to an avian influenza is a huge challenge and demands even more efforts from the countries members of the European Union. This should occur in the framework of a general approach to situations of emergency of public health, so that the resources and the expertise could be effectively used and so that it will be ensured that the procedures and the functions could be object of management and could be as simple as they can. As it can be understood, the cross-sections action should be a neuralgic reference to the effective face of the avian influenza. Many precautions have been taken in national and community level, so that it will be ensured that all the measures will be effective and well coordinated. However, even more efforts have to be made in order to achieve the best prevention and the effective management of pictures.
