Health insurance is one of the basic achievements of the social movements in developed countries. This process started at the end of the 19th century in Germany, United Kingdom and the United States of America and its development continues until today. One basic characteristic of this process is the differences n the way health insurance is offered. For example there is a big difference between private and public health insurance between the United States of America and the European Union countries. Nevertheless there are some common characteristics in the health insurance system among all these countries. These are focused mainly on the way that health insurance confronts the problem of asymmetric information. The basic scope of this essay is to describe the problem of asymmetric information, to present its consequences for the health insurance market and some ways of circumventing the problem.
