The subject of this study is to examine the role and activities of the Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs) today in the domain of the development cooperation and aid and especially the case of Greece. Thesis approach is based in three main chapters: in the first, the theoretical background, as well as the current discussion in the literature regarding civil society and NGOs are presented. In the second part, the content of the term "development co-operation" is analyzed, in order to understand the role of the different actors involved (e.g. donor countries, recipient countries) and mainly the contribution of development NGOs as actors implementing programmes of the official bilateral aid of the developed countries. Finally, the last part focus on the Greek case, in order to present and evaluate the process in the co-operation of the Greek NGOs with the state for the implementation of development programmes and projects abroad.
