This study is set in the wider frame of discussion about the crisis the social security systems experience. Through an historical approach we attempted to highlight the passage from the beginning stage of social provision noticed in the first societies, to the constitution of specific types of social welfare states and insurance models. Our research focused in the presentation of the current welfare models, while also in the basic components that contribute in the operation of pension systems. More concretely, we were orientated in the challenges the welfare systems confront trying to underline the grandness of the demographic development factor that set in doubt the sufficiency and viability of social welfare systems. Taking into consideration the experiences of past and the problems that afflict the insurance models we produce reasons in order to stress the need of reforms.
