The association of economy with health has been proved in many ways. Poverty creates disease while wealth protects and promotes health. In a worldwide scale, there is distinct equivalence between the economy of a country and the health level of its population. During the last decades, the relation between public sector expenses, and therefore expenses on healthcare, and economic growth has caused great interest. An attempt to control this association of healthcare expenses with economic growth is made in this dissertation. Specifically, the issue examined here is the extent to which healthcare is influenced by the real national gross product, the expenses on hospital healthcare, the occupancy rate of hospital beds, hospitals and population density. For this reason, statistic figures have been used deriving from four European Union countries, Greece, Germany, Spain and Italy, over a thirty-year period of time from 1975 to 2005. Reciprocation analysis with Panel Estimation is the econometric model used for the extraction of the results, a method estimated to be the most appropriate due to intertemporal and stratificated data.
