The current dissertation focuses on the pharmaceutical field and aims at researching the status of the pharmaceutical market in Greece as well as at examining the prospects of the field in a period of economic recession. What triggered me in writing this particular dissertation was the greater viability of the pharmaceutical field throughout the current economic recession when compared with other sectors of economy, without implying that this sector is not affected by the developments generated by the international economic crisis.
Methodology: The dissertation consists of two parts. The first part focuses on the theoretical section where an analytical presentation of the field is attempted with an overview of the current Greek and international bibliography. The second part focuses on the practical section – field research – which was conducted using two semi-constructed interviews with experts in the field. The first interview was conducted with the General Manager of the Institute of Economic and Industrial Research of the University of Athens, Mr. John Stournaras. The second interview was carried out with Mr. Panagiotis Zervakakis. The purpose of the interviews was to investigate the status of the pharmaceutical market from the point of view of eminent experts from two distinct fields; Mr. Stournaras through a theoretical approach while Mr. Zervakakis through the very pharmaceutical industry. Conclusions: The pharmaceutical field is one of the most dynamic branches of the Greek economy. The domestic fiscal recession should not be treated as a threat. The pharmaceutical branch has been one of the few branches that has resisted considering the recession that has inflicted Greece. It faces considerable problems, the most important of which that of the constant increase in the pharmaceutical expenditure. The state has implemented measures for the cleansing of this sector. These measures decreased the expenses resulting however in the reduction of other parameters at the same time. Emphasis on the field of generics, on the field of biotechnology and of clinical research will contribute to the further development of the field.
