Τhe present paper ventures into the ecological and economic analysis of the Marine Protected Areas as they are applied worldwide. Beginning from the analysis of two cases where the measure of the Marine Protected Areas has been applied, we intend to present the ecological effectiveness of the measure, as seen in those two entirely different cases. The cases under examination are those of George’s Bank and the Medes Islands, in which, equal ecological results have been obtained, in both the endemic species and the ecological status. Consecutively, we spot and analyze the cost parameters deriving from the function of a Marine Protected Area, in order to extend our project into the analysis of the current environmental state of the Greek island Melos. Finally, we extend our research into the attempt of the establishment of a financial tool, by which the Marine Protected Area “Melos” can obtain an economic self-sustainability. The present paper concludes both to the imminent need of the island for a Marine Protected Area and to the ability of that area to financially sustain itself now and in the coming future.
