Nowadays the climate change is a global issue. Greenhouse effect, which is the most significant cause of climate change, has been intensified by the increase of greenhouse gas emissions. The quantity, concentration and duration of greenhouse gases damage the structure and characteristics of the atmosphere resulting to air pollution. Atmospheric pollutants such as carbon dioxide, sulphur dioxide, nitric oxide, particulate matters and volatile organic compounds, can harm human beings and cause damage to environment. Shipping is also responsible for a considerable amount of gas emissions. This fact affects climate change causing negative and positive consequences for shipping. Regulations, laws and protocols such as the Montreal Protocol, Kyoto Protocol and the Annex VI of the MARPOL 73/78 have been established in order to decrease gas emissions. New technologies and better energy management can contribute to gas emission reduction.
