In this thesis it is mentioned the significant role of shipping industry to the Greek economy, as well as, it is presented its fundamentals and characteristics. Then it is analyzed the causes and effects of the global financial crisis on the economy and the international and Greek shipping industry. More specifically, it is analyzed the evolution of fare rates, stock market exchange of fare rates (BDI), the price and the market for ships, the financing in the transport and bank loans, the share prices, the loan obligations and the ability of repayment and shipyards. In next part it is described the role of China and other emerging economies, like Brazil, Russia and India in particular, to the recovery of the global economy. Finally, it is analyzed which are the prospects for both international and Greek shipping as well it is described the new needs that the Greek shipping industry should be adjusted in order to remain competitive.
