The purpose of the ISM Code is to provide an international standard for the safe management and operation of the ships and the prevention of pollution. The objectives are to secure the safety, the prevention of injuries or losses of human lives and the prevention of damages to the environment or to the property. The Code establishes the proper implementation of the objectives and demands a safety management system that will be imposed by whoever is responsible for the operation of the ship. The relative data was collected by bibliographical research and information about the clauses and statutory institutions of the ISM code. At the time being, the shipping industry is guided mainly by the strict legislation of the Code and that of each country. In the future environmental education of everyone involved in the shipping industry, from the countries to the rating on the ships, should become necessary so that they will develop ecological awareness and learn how to protect the environment.
