The important growth of the shipping market during the last few years led to corresponding increase of demand for new transportation capacity from the shipbuilding industry. In this new environment, competitive advantages should be developed by the shipbuilding yards in order to acquire the market’s biggest share. In the present paper the world regions where shipyards are established and the particular characteristics of these regions are discussed with reference to the technological infrastructures, workforce and the economic environment that prevails. Business strategies that are developed by the shipyards are analyzed, and their applications which are related with factors, such as new technologies, cost and productivity. Also certain methods of ship construction are presented, which are based on the various data that comes from ship production. Finally S.W.O.T. analysis is used as a method of composition for the assessment of the enterprise’s operational conditions and the possibilities that has in order to cope with these conditions.
