This thesis examines the relationship between telecommunications and sustainability, aiming to analyze the bidirectional interaction between the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) sector and sustainable development. In particular, it investigates both the contribution of telecommunications to improving environmental performance across various sectors of the economy and the impact of sustainability principles on the design, development, and operation of telecommunications infrastructures.
The methodology is based on an extensive literature review of international scientific studies, institutional reports, and technical documents related to the environmental footprint of ICT, the energy consumption of networks, and current sustainability practices. The analysis is structured in distinct stages, including the presentation of the theoretical framework, the classification of ICT components, the assessment of environmental impacts, and the examination of technological and strategic developments related to sustainability.
The findings indicate that ICT plays a crucial role in enabling sustainable development by optimizing resource use, reducing emissions, and supporting the deployment of smart systems in key sectors such as energy, transportation, and industry. At the same time, the increasing demand for digital services leads to rising energy consumption, creating significant challenges for the sector. Particular emphasis is placed on the concept of green networks, the transition to 5G and 6G technologies, and the role of artificial intelligence, all of which are key drivers for improving energy efficiency in the future.
In conclusion, the study highlights that achieving sustainability in the telecommunications sector requires the integration of sustainability principles into technology design, the adoption of renewable energy sources, and the implementation of comprehensive resource management strategies. Balancing digital growth with environmental protection remains a major challenge for the years ahead.
